Statements by the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council
on the Terrorist Bombing in Egypt on Feb 16





In a statement attributable to his Spokesperson, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the terrorist attack on a bus with tourists from the Republic of Korea on board on February 16 in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.

The UN Security Council also made an urgent press statement at 10:00 a.m., February 17 Korea Standard Time, condemning in the strongest terms the terrorist attack.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

The members of the Security Council extended their sympathy and condolences to the Governments of the ROK and Egypt and the victims of the terrorist attack.

Given that the terrorist attack killed or injured Koreans, the ROK took the lead in drawing up and adopting the Security Council’s press statement.

The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s terrorist attack on a bus in the southern Sinai town of Taba, which reportedly killed four people, including three South Korean tourists, and wounded many others.

He conveys his condolences to the families of the victims and to the Governments of Egypt and the Republic of Korea. He calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack targeting a bus with tourists from the Republic of Korea on board on 16th February, 2014 in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, killing at least 4 people and injuring dozens.

The members of the Security Council extended their condolences to the families of the victims and expressed their sympathy to all those injured in this heinous act, and to the people and Governments of Egypt and the Republic of Korea.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and all obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.



ROK MOFA Spokesperson’s Statement
on the Terrorist Bombing Attack in Egypt


The government of the Republic of Korea cannot withhold utmost resentment and outrage over and strongly condemns the terrorist bombing attack on a tourist bus carrying ROK nationals, which occurred in Taba on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula near the border with Israel on February 16.

The government of the Republic of Korea offers its deepest condolences and consolation to the victims and their families and will continue extending support to them in every way it can.

The government of the Republic of Korea appreciates the prompt actions taken by the Egyptian and the Israeli authorities on the heels of the incident, including sending the victims to local hospitals for treatment. It will work closely with the international community, including the Egyptian government, to find out those behind the attack and its motives as soon as possible.

The government of the Republic of Korea, under its firm position that terrorist acts are crimes against humanity that cannot be justified under any circumstances and should be eradicated by all means, will continue to actively participate in the efforts of the international community to eradicate acts of terrorism.
