President Park’s State Visit to Canada


◈ Meeting with Members of the Korean Community in Canada




President Park Geun-hye, who is making a state visit to Canada, held a dinner last night with invited members of local Korean communities in Canada. Attending the first official event of the President’s state visit were some 210 Koreans and Korean Canadians, including Canadian Federal Senator Yonha Martin.

President Park gave high marks to the rising standing of the Korean community in Canada, which has grown into an exemplary, respected community on the strength of the assiduous diligence of Korean residents, and applauded the members of the community. The President also took note of the significance of her visit: As the first state visit to Canada by a Korean President in 15 years, it is also the first time since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1963 for the leaders of the two countries to have made reciprocal visits during the same year. The President also gave a high evaluation to how bilateral relations have continued to develop for over half a century.

◈ Attending Official Welcoming Ceremony in Canada




President Park Geun-hye attended an official welcoming ceremony, the first official event of her state visit to Canada, held at the residence of the Governor General in the afternoon yesterday. The event began with President Park reviewing the honor guard, followed by Governor General David Johnston’s welcoming remarks and President Park’s remarks in response.




In his remarks, Governor General Johnston said he hoped that he would be able to reciprocate the warm hospitality extended to him during his visit to Korea to attend President Park’s inauguration last year. He also noted that the long-standing history of Korea- Canada ties is a marvelous foundation on which to further bilateral collaboration and build a bright future for both nations.

◈ Paying Tribute at National War Memorial in Canada




President Park Geun-hye made a visit to the National War Memorial in Canada in the morning for the first event of the second day of her state visit. While there, she laid a wreath in tribute and expressed gratitude once again for the noble sacrifices and dedication of the Korean War veterans in Canada, the country that sent the third largest number of troops to fight in the war.

President Park made it clear to Minister of Veterans Affairs of Canada Julian Fantino and Mr. Bill Black, president of the Ottawa chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association, that she would redouble efforts to ensure sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula and overcome the division.

◈ Addressing Canada-Korea Business Symposium




President Park Geun-hye attended the Canada-Korea Business Symposium, co-hosted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Korean Industries, in the afternoon. In her keynote speech, President Park proposed ways to bolster economic cooperation between the two countries.

First, the President noted that as old friends, who have stood together through thick and thin, Korea and Canada have been expanding collaboration in the international arena, upholding such shared values as democracy and a market economy. She also added that the signing of a Korea-Canada free trade agreement today laid the foundation for upgrading cooperative ties between the two nations.
