President Park Attends UN General Assembly


◈ Meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon




President Park Geun-hye met with Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon at his official residence in New York in the evening. The meeting was followed by a private dinner hosted by the Secretary-General for the President that was also attended by World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.

President Park gave high marks to the fact that Secretary-General Ban’s endeavors to reform the UN and make its administration more efficient have been producing tangible results. In response, Secretary-General Ban expressed appreciation to the President and also to the Korean Government and people for their support.

◈ Speaking at the U.N. Climate Summit 2014




President Park Geun-hye has emphasized that we should consider action taken to face climate change as an opportunity. She was speaking at the U.N. Climate Summit 2014 which took place on September 23 at U.N. headquarters in New York.

“We need to see climate action not as a burden, but as an opportunity,” said President Park. “Investing in the chance to unlock new energy industries and jobs can ignite fresh engines of future growth,” she said.

She urged that technology and market-based solutions should be at the center of our response to climate change, emphasizing efforts in the private sector. “Innovations can’t come from government alone. To encourage the private sector to lead, markets should reward carbon-cutting innovations,” said the president.

◈ Holding a Summit with the Presidents of Egypt and Uganda on the Sidelines of the UN General Assembly




President Park Geun-hye, who is visiting New York to attend the 69th session of the UN General Assembly tomorrow, met with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt. During their summit, they discussed pending issues between the two countries and the recent developments in the Middle East.

The two heads of state made a positive assessment of progress in cooperative ties in a wide range of areas since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1995. They also discussed how to work together to address major global issues, including what transpires in the Middle East, and to promote bilateral economic collaboration, including increased participation by Korean businesses in large-scale economic projects being pushed by Egypt such as Korea-Egypt nuclear power plant construction.

President Park Geun-hye, who is in New York to attend the 69th session of the UN General Assembly tomorrow, held a summit with President Yoweri K. Museveni of Uganda at the headquarters of the United Nations. At the summit, the two leaders discussed ways to promote friendship and cooperation for mutual benefit and work together in the international arena.

President Park began by congratulating Uganda on assuming the chair of the UN General Assembly and said that she looked forward to the African country playing an important role in promoting global peace and tackling issues facing the international community such as the post-2015 development goals.

◈ Cochairing UN Climate Summit Thematic Session on Financing




President Park Geun-hye, who is attending the UN Climate Summit, presided over the thematic session on financing as a cochair together with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in the afternoon. The session was attended by heads of government, including the Norwegian Prime Minister, and leaders of international organizations, including the EU Commission President, the UN Secretary-General and the World Bank President, as well as top business leaders from Bank of America, Credit Agricole and the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES). It was convened to discuss the importance of pooling financial resources to solve problems stemming from climate change and look into ways for the public and private sectors to cooperate in raising funds.

As the centerpiece of the afternoon sessions of this year’s Climate Summit, the 100-minute-long thematic session on financing consisted of an opening ceremony and two 45-minute discussions on private sector leadership and public sector leadership, respectively. The opening ceremony featured remarks delivered by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, both highlighting the importance of raising funds to address climate change.

◈ Delivering the Keynote Speech at the 69th U.N. General Assembly




President Park Geun-hye delivered the keynote speech at the 69th U.N. General Assembly on September 24, a first for her time in office.

The global meeting was held under the theme of “Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.”

President Park emphasized that the U.N. should go back to where it began, with its human-centered goals and international cooperation, and play a central role in effectively responding to new, simultaneous threats and challenges, such as the continued conflicts in the Middle East and African regions, terrorism targeting foreigners in Iraq, the Ukrainian crisis and the Ebola epidemic.

◈ Attending the UN Security Council Summit and Making a Speech at the High-level Meeting of the Global Education First Initiative(GEFI)




President Park Geun-hye took part in the United Nations Security Council Summit held on September 24. At the meeting chaired by U.S. President Barack Obama, participants in the meeting keenly discussed issues regarding terrorist violence, an issue that has become a serious threat to world peace and security.

President Park said that the Islamic State (IS) has become very active in Syria and Iraq and that IS terrorists recruited from across the world are no longer the problem of solely a single region or country, but an issue for all of international society. To deal with the threat, the president emphasized swift, effective and systematic joint action by the international community.




In the afternoon, President Park made a speech at the high-level meeting of the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI). The president said it is time for the international community to take action to provide quality education. She outlined Korea`s experience in achieving its "miracle on the Han River" by carrying out varying education policies based on its stage of economic development.

The president also said Korea would share its experiences with other countries and that it will successfully host the World Education Forum 2015 in a bid to contribute to a future vision for global education.
