President Park Attends ASEM Summit and Makes Official Visit to Italy


▣ Attending Korea-Italy Business Forum




President Park Geun-hye attended the Italy-Korea Business Forum this morning, co-hosted by Confindustria and the Federation of Korean Industries and held at Palazzo Clerici in Milan. In her keynote speech, President Park proposed ways for the two countries to carry out economic cooperation.

Despite the fact that Korea and Italy are the eighth and ninth biggest trade powerhouses in the world, respectively, the volume of bilateral trade and investment has fallen short of their international standing. For this reason, enhanced exchanges and collaboration between the two on the foundation of creative economies are expected to help further expand bilateral trade and investment commensurate with their economic status.

▣ Announcing Dispatch of Healthcare Workers to Respond to Ebola Outbreak




President Park Geun-hye attended the Second Plenary Session of the 10th ASEM Summit held in Milan, Italy. At the Session themed, “Europe-Asia Partnership in Addressing Global Matters in an Inter- Connected World,” President Park announced that the Korean Government would actively join the international community’s efforts to help stem the spread of the Ebola virus by sending healthcare workers, in addition to its humanitarian assistance, to areas affected by the outbreak.

With the President’s announcement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of National Defense and Ministry of Health and Welfare will now meet to determine the size of the contingent of healthcare personnel and its makeup, the duration of its mission and safety measures. In consideration of the urgency of the Ebola situation, the Government plans to send its healthcare professionals at the earliest possible date.

▣ Meeting with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, French President Francois Hollande and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on the Sidelines of 10th ASEM Summit




President Park Geun-hye held a summit with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting in Milan, Italy, on October 16. This is the first time for the two leaders to meet after their respective inaugurations. The results of the meeting were announced in a joint statement.

The two sides agreed to strengthen both their strategic partnership and the Korean-Danish Green Growth Alliance. They agreed to seek actual cooperation between the two countries on start-up companies, entrepreneurship, design, innovation, and the creative industries. They also agreed to expand joint research into renewable energy sources and to promote cooperation in cultural areas, including film, the performing and visual arts, food and sports.

President Park Geun-hye met with President Francois Hollande of France on the sidelines of the 10th ASEM Summit. During their afternoon summit, the two heads of state discussed follow-up measures to their summit in November last year and ways to promote substantive cooperation as well as regional and international issues.

The two leaders noted that the comprehensive partnership for the 21st century, which was agreed to between the two countries when President Park visited France last November, has been further deepened. They also reached an agreement to help infuse new vitality into binational efforts to seamlessly carry out exchange programs currently being prepared for 2015 and 2016 in commemoration of the 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

President Park Geun-hye, who is visiting Milan, Italy to attend the 10th ASEM Summit, met with Premier Li Keqiang of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. During their evening meeting, they discussed Korea-China relations as well as bilateral cooperation and the latest developments surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

▣ CHAIR`S STATEMENT of the Tenth Asia - Europe Meeting

Responsible Partnership for Sustainable Growth and Security




1. The Tenth Asia ? Europe Meeting (ASEM10) was held in Milan, Italy, on 16-17 October 2014. The meeting was attended by the Heads of State and Government, or their high-level representatives, of fifty-one Asian and European countries, the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission and the Secretary-General of ASEAN. It was hosted by the Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi and chaired by the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

2. A warm welcome was extended to Croatia and Kazakhstan who on this occasion acceded to ASEM and became ASEM partner countries.

3. Under the theme “Responsible Partnership for Sustainable Growth and Security”, leaders exchanged views on economic, financial, regional and global issues, as well as traditional and non-traditional security challenges, in the spirit of partnership between Asia and Europe. Highlighting the importance of maintaining peace, security and stability, leaders discussed the way forward in creating an enabling environment for the prosperity of their people through the enhancing of links between Asia and Europe. Leaders also agreed to strengthen ASEM’s three pillars of cooperation in the lead-up to ASEM’s 20th anniversary in 2016.

▣ Meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi




President Park Geun-hye met with President Giorgio Napolitano of the Italian Republic this afternoon. At their meeting, they had in-depth discussions on a variety of issues, including the reform policies of the two countries, ways to expand substantive cooperation in trade and investment, collaboration to promote a creative economy and the current state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

President Park began by thanking the Italian President for inviting her to make an official visit to Italy. She also congratulated him on the successful hosting of the 10th ASEM in Milan.

▣ Meeting with Pope Francis




President Park Geun-hye met with Pope Francis in Vatican City on October 17, the last day of her visit to Italy after attending the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Milan. The meeting came in return for the pope’s visit to Korea last August, the first papal trip to the Asian country in a quarter of a century.

During the talks, Park said that she hoped someday to receive the pope in a unified Korean Peninsula. The pontiff replied, “Let us pray for a peaceful reunification of the divided Korean Peninsula and for peace across Northeast Asia.”
