President Park Geun-hye attended the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) during her visit to Beijing for the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting.

President Park engaged in an in-depth discussion with a small group involving U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and business people from across the Asia- Pacific region. They exchanged opinions on a wide range of issues, including plans to foster small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), investment and cooperation on food and energy security.

◈ Attending First Session of 2014 APEC Summit




On the morning of the second day of the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing, President Park Geun-hye attended the first session to discuss the progress of regional economic integration.




In her remarks, President Park noted APEC’s 25-year-long contribution to economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region since its inauguration in 1989. She also actively participated in discussions on the promotion of trade liberalization, a core element of Korea’s economic growth, by proposing directions for APEC to take in the future, including the launch of the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP) process and the acceleration of trade and investment liberalization.

◈ Attending Second Session of 2014 APEC Summit




The president explained the plan during the second session of the APEC summit, on the theme of sustainable growth across the Asia-Pacific region. She expressed Korea’s will to actively reform and innovate its economy.

President Park gave detailed explanations to the participating APEC leaders about the economic policies included in Korea ’s three-year economic innovation plan. The plan includes regulatory reform and her administration`s vision for the creative industries, for both of which APEC leaders have shown strong interest and expressed support.

◈ Holding Summit Talks with U.S. President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Sidelines of APEC Summit




President Park Geun-hye held summit talks with U.S. President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Beijing on November 11. They discussed measures to boost cooperation and issues involving the Korean Peninsula.

Presidents Park and Obama agreed that the united stance of the international community is very crucial when dealing with the North Korean nuclear weapons threat. Both leaders agreed to make stronger joint efforts toward the goal of a denuclearized North Korea.




On the same day, President Park held summit talks with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott to discuss cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including the economy and politics.

President Park told her Australian counterpart that, "I am glad that both Korea and Australia have been strengthening strategic communication in a comprehensive and multi-layered manner by holding meetings about foreign affairs, defense, and strategic dialogue." She valued the bilateral relationship, saying that, "The two countries cooperate not only at a bilateral relations level, but also at the multilateral level in the international community, such as at the U.N., and cooperate on the peace and prosperity of the international community."

◈ Holding Summit Talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sidelines of East Asia Summit




President Park Geun-hye, who is visiting Naypyidaw, Myanmar to attend the East Asia Summit, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Republic of India at the Myanmar International Convention Center today. During their summit, they discussed ways to strengthen the bilateral strategic partnership under the new Indian Administration and promote economic cooperation.

President Park said she understood well how hard Prime Minister Modi had worked since his inauguration to develop his country’s economy, including the implementation of a bold policy to attract foreign investment. She went on to say that she looked forward to the progress of the Indian economy under his leadership and that she hoped today’s summit would pave the way for enhanced bilateral relations. In response, Prime Minister Modi said he had taken an interest in Korea’s economic growth since 2007 when he visited Korea as Chief Minister of Gujarat. He continued to say that he hoped Korea- India relations would become stronger.

◈ Attending 9th East Asia Summit




President Park Geun-hye attended the 9th East Asia Summit (EAS) today at the Myanmar International Convention Center in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. During the summit, President Park and other participating leaders exchanged their views on key regional and international issues, including disaster control, protection of the environment and wildlife, prevention of the spread of Ebola and counterterrorism. They also discussed the direction of development for the EAS.

At this year’s Summit, the participating leaders from 18 countries noted that the EAS, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, has served as a strategic forum contributing to regional peace and prosperity. They also took note of the fact that the EAS has helped achieve substantive cooperation mainly in the six priority areas of the environment and energy, finance, education, healthcare, disaster management and ASEAN connectivity.

◈ Holding Summit Talks with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Sidelines of East Asia Summit




President Park Geun-hye, who is currently visiting Naypyidaw, Myanmar, to attend the East Asia Summit, met with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of the Kingdom of Thailand at the Myanmar International Convention Center today. During their summit, they discussed current state affairs in the two countries and ways to enhance cooperation in the regional and international arenas.

Noting that Thailand is Korea`s strategic partner and traditional friend that sent troops to fight during the Korean War, President Park said the two countries have continued to develop friendly and cooperative ties in a variety of areas. Prime Minister Prayut responded by saying that Koreans and Thais have forged a close friendly relationship since the dispatch of troops at that time.

◈ Highlighting G20 Policy Coordination in Preparation for Instabilities in International Financial Markets




President Park Geun-hye attended the second session of the G20 Summit today and discussed with the participating leaders how to enhance the resilience of the global economy.

President Park pointed out that advanced countries had recently implemented monetary policies leading in all different directions, contributing to an increase in the volatility of international financial markets. She also stressed the necessity of keeping in mind that a herding effect in determining currency values of key advanced countries would impose burdens on some emerging economies.

◈ Urging G20 to Raise Funds for GCF




President Park Geun-hye attended the third session of the G20 Summit and highlighted the importance of raising funds for the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Emphasizing how hard the Korean Government was working to give impetus to the new energy industry, President Park urged the G20 to join such endeavors.

President Park said climate change was posing threats to human survival and safety and that it was important for the international community to work together and take action in addressing the issue effectively. She explained that Korea had pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent from its business-as-usual (BAU) level forecast for 2020 in order to contribute to formulating a new international climate regime. She also added that the Korean Government was making efforts to carry out its commitments by implementing an emissions trading scheme that would start in 2015. The President said it was essential for developing nations to join such efforts to achieve effective reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. She continued to stress the importance of the GCF’s role and its expeditious capitalization to that end.

◈ Holding Summit Talks with Saudi Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on Sidelines of G20 Summit




President Park Geun-hye, who is visiting Brisbane, Australia to attend the G20 Summit, met with Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the afternoon. Crown Prince Salman is the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia on behalf of his aged father, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who is 92; he concurrently serves as defense minister. During their summit, the two leaders discussed ways to establish new strategic and forward-looking cooperative ties between the two countries.

President Park said she had had a useful meeting with economy-related ministers of Saudi Arabia to discuss how to promote bilateral economic cooperation on the occasion of the Korea-Saudi Arabia Business Forum held in Seoul in late October this year. She also noted that the Forum was meaningful in that it was attended by business leaders and minister-level officials from both countries.
