Minister of Foreign Affairs Attends 3rd Ministerial Meeting of the Stockholm Initiative on Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty
Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha virtually attended the “Third Ministerial Meeting of the Stockholm Initiative on Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)” on January 6, the first ministerial multilateral meeting in the area of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in 2021. The meeting brought together 16 non-nuclear countries including Korea to discuss ways to further promote nuclear disarmament and strengthen the NPT regime ahead of the Review Conference of the NPT in August marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty’s entry into force. In her leading remarks, Foreign Minister Kang underscored the need for the international community to shore up the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime based on the NPT to achieve the goal of “a world free of nuclear weapons,” and emphasized the Korean government’s commitment to contribute in this regard.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the first working-level virtual meeting among countries in the region with the aim of launching the “Northeast Asia Cooperation Initiative for Infectious Disease Control and Public Health” on December 29. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha stressed the importance of mid- to long-term regional cooperation not only in tackling the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also in preparing against health security risks, including the emergence of other new infectious diseases.

1st Korea-India High-level Policy Consultation on Global Issues Takes Place
Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Ham Sang-wook, together with Additional Secretary (International Organizations) of the Ministry of External Affairs of India Vinay Kumar, virtually held the 1st “Korea-India high-level policy consultation on global issues” on January 7. In the consultation, the two sides extensively discussed global issues of mutual interest, including India’s plan as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2021-2022 term.
