Minister of Foreign Affairs Chairs 18th MIKTA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha chaired the 18th MIKTA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on February 3. At the meeting, Korea, which has served as the MIKTA chair since February last year, ended its chairmanship, and the MIKTA member states took stock of MIKTA’s achievements over the last year and discussed the way forward. Participants noted with appreciation that the five MIKTA countries, under the leadership of Korea, have repeatedly sent a message of global solidarity and cooperation even in the difficult situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, and thereby enhanced MIKTA’s standing and role. They also agreed to maintain the momentum for MIKTA’s development through close collaboration among the member states following the handover of chairmanship from Korea to Australia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha, together with Ambassador of Georgia to Korea Otar Berdzenishvili, signed the “Agreement on Air Services between the Government of the Republic of Korea and the Government of Georgia” on February 4, 2021.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jong Kun had a telephone conversation with Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs of Iran Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on February 2, for an early release of the Korean-flagged vessel Hankuk Chemi and its crew that have been in detention for nearly a month. Deputy Minister Araghchi informed Vice Minister Choi of the Iranian government’s decision to release all the sailors, aside from the captain.

Mr. Park Il, Director-General for Nonproliferation and Nuclear Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited Vienna, Austria, from February 1 to 3. During the visit, the Director-General met with officials of the Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and discussed key issues concerning non-proliferation and nuclear energy.
