Foreign Minister’s Call with UN Secretary-General
On March 11, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong spoke with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the first time since his inauguration. Together they discussed topics of mutual interest, including Korea-UN cooperation, the situation on the Korean Peninsula as well as other regional issues, and ways to increase Korean nationals’ presence at high-level positions of the UN. Foreign Minister Chung and Secretary-General Guterres highlighted UN＇s leading role in dealing with global issues: peacekeeping, COVID-19 and climate change, among others. The Secretary-General appreciated Korea’s role in addressing these issues, and they agreed to further strengthen mutual cooperation.

On March 8, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong had a telephone conversation with Dr. Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for the first time since his inauguration. They exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including bilateral relations between Korea and the European Union (EU), cooperation in COVID-19 response, and situations on the Korean Peninsula and in other regions.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong had his first telephone conversation with External Affairs Minister of India Mr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on March 9 and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including the bilateral relations between Korea and India, a major cooperation partner for Korea’s New Southern Policy, as well as response to COVID-19 and cooperation in the international arena.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jong Kun had a meeting with the Ambassadors of 17 Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries on March 10, and exchanged views on ways to strengthen Korea’s diplomacy toward LAC, including high-level exchanges in 2021 and to promote substantive cooperation for the post-COVID-19 economic recovery.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jongmoon spoke over the phone with Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister for South Asia and the Commonwealth at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the United Kingdom on March 10, and exchanged views on ways for the two countries to work together in promoting democracy and human rights.
