Spokesperson’s Commentary on Signing of New START Treaty between the US and Russia

The Korean government appreciates and welcomes the specific measures taken between the leaders of the US and Russia to realize a world free of nuclear weapons by signing the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START Treaty) in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 8, 2010. The signing of the New START Treaty between the US and Russia, which demonstrates their proactive efforts to fulfill nuclear disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), is expected to have a positive impact on global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts, including the upcoming NPT Review Conference in May (New York, May 3-28).
