Foreign Minister’s Visit to Vietnam

Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan visited Vietnam to attend the 2010 Korea-ASEAN/ARF (ASEAN Regional Forum) Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 22-23.

During the visit, he paid a courtesy call on Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and attended a dinner hosted by Vo Hong Phuc, Minister of Planning and Investment, on July 23, and met with Pham Gia Khiem, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, on July 24.

Minister Yu conveyed to Prime Minister Dung warm regards from President Lee Myung-bak. Offering appreciation, Prime Minister Dung responded that he looks forward to meeting with President Lee again at the ASEAN Summit slated for October in Vietnam.

Prime Minister Dung took note of the fact that the Korea-Vietnam relationship was upgraded to a strategic cooperative partnership during President Lee Myung-bak’s state visit to the country last year based on rapid development of bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992.

Minister Yu met with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Gia Khiem, who is also serving as Deputy Prime Minister, on July 24. The two ministers discussed the ASEAN/ARF Meeting, the recent death of a Vietnamese woman and economic cooperation.

Minister Yu offered congratulations on the successful ASEAN/ARF Meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Khiem, while Deputy Prime Minister Khiem thanked Minister Yu for his contribution to the success of the Meeting.

Minister Yu elucidated the Korean position on the Cheonan incident and the North Korean nuclear issue. Offering consolation once more over the Cheonan incident, Deputy Prime Minister Khiem stated that Vietnam, as the ASEAN chair, will continue to play a constructive role in this regard.

Describing the recent death of a Vietnamese woman as deeply regrettable, Minister Yu elaborated that a meeting of relevant government agencies was held with Prime Minister Chung Un-chan as its chair to start setting up measures to prevent recurrence of such incident. Deputy Prime Minister Khiem extended deep gratitude over measures taken by the Korean government.

Deputy Prime Minister Khiem, while showing satisfaction with the current Korea-Vietnam economic cooperation, hoped for its further expansion. Minister Yu requested Vietnam’s support for Korean businesses that wish to participate in infrastructure and nuclear-plant sectors in the country, and looked forward to close cooperation with Vietnam toward the conclusion of a Korea-Vietnam FTA.
