ASEAN+3/EAS Summit



On the sidelines of the Vietnam-hosted ASEAN+3/EAS Summit, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan had meetings with his counterparts from China, Japan, USA, and Russia from October 28 to 30. In the meetings with his counterparts, Foreign Minister Kim discussed bilateral issues and agreed to maintain cooperation efforts to achieve denuclearization of North Korea.

On October 28, Foreign Minister Kim met with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi, in Hanoi. In the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the Korea-China relationship; the G20 Seoul Summit; the current situation on the Korean peninsula and the overall Northeast Asia; and other matters of mutual concern.



After taking note of the development of Korea-China ties, the two Foreign Ministers agreed to continue developing the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership by promoting high-level officials’ exchange; economic and trade cooperation; and friendship between the peoples of the two countries.

On October 29, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan had a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Seiji Maehara. In the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers exchanged views on Korea-Japan ties, North Korea-related issues and other matters of common interest.



In the meeting, the two sides reviewed progress in the implementation of follow-up measures to Prime Minister Kan’s statement issued on August 10, and agreed to work actively together to build future-oriented, friendly and cooperative ties.

The Japanese side explained that work is underway for an early return of Joseon Dynasty Uigwe and other archives. Meanwhile, the Korean delegation requested that the Japanese side take sincere steps for headway in outstanding history issues, including assistance for ethnic Koreans in Sakhalin, return of Patriot Ahn Jung-geun’s remains and compensation for comfort women. The Japanese side responded that measures cited in the Prime Minister’s statement will be faithfully implemented.

On October 30, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and discussed the G20 Seoul Summit this November and President Obama’s planned visit to Korea for the occasion; ways to further develop the ROK-US alliance; the nuclear and other North Korea-related issues; major regional and international issues; and other matters of mutual concern.



With Secretary Clinton conveying President Obama’s high expectations on the upcoming visit to Korea for the G20 Seoul Summit, the two sides reaffirmed their willingness to cooperate for the success of the Summit and agreed to make every preparation to turn President Obama’s Korea trip during the Summit into a meaningful and fruitful one.

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan also met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on October 30. The two Foreign Ministers discussed Korea-Russia ties; the North Korean nuclear issue; the G20 Seoul Summit; cooperation on the international stage; and other matters of mutual interest.



Acknowledging the growth of the strategic cooperative partnership between Korea and Russia that marks the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, the two sides agreed to build on President Lee Myung-bak’s participation in the Yaroslavl Forum in Russia and President Medvedev’s upcoming visit to Korea for the G20 Seoul Summit for future-oriented development of Korea-Russia ties.
