Outcome of the Korea-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Conversation

1. Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan had a telephone conversation with his Japanese counterpart Seiji Maehara on October 8 to discuss the issue involving Joseon Dynasty Uigwe and other archives.

2. The two Foreign Ministers confirmed the substantive agreement reached between the authorities of the two countries on Joseon Dynasty Uigwe and other archives originating from the Korean peninsula as part of follow-up measures to the Japanese Prime Minister’s August 10 statement. They then agreed to conclude an inter-governmental treaty in this regard at an early date.

3. As a result, 1,205 volumes, which were taken from the Korean peninsula, including Joseon Dynasty Uigwe , are expected to return to Korea.

4. The Government of the Republic of Korea takes note of the latest steps by the Japanese government in the 100th year of Japan’s forced annexation of Korea and hopes that such efforts will lead to a further increase in cultural exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Japan.
