Vice Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, Shin Kak-soo paid a visit to Lebanon on February 28 and had ‘The 2nd Korea-Lebanon Policy Consultation’ with Vice Foreign Minister William Habib. The two counterparts discussed matters of mutual interest as well as ways to promote bilateral cooperation. Vice Minister Shin then visited the ‘Dongmyung Unit’ dispatched in the southern region of Tyre, and received a briefing on the peace-keeping operations in Lebanon at the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) Headquarters.

During the Policy Consultation, the two sides exchanged views on the recent political developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East. They also sought ways to increase development cooperation and the volume of bilateral trade, as well as collaborative efforts on the international stage. Vice Minister Shin explained the endeavors of the Korean government to support peace, stability and reconstruction in Lebanon. And he asked for the continuous support of the Lebanese government and its military authorities for the Dongmyung Unit. Expressing satisfaction on the growth of bilateral cooperation, and Vice Minister Habib also expressed gratitude to the Korean government for assisting the reconstruction of Lebanon and dispatching the Dongmyung Unit.

After the meeting, Vice Minister Shin had a luncheon with the Dongmyung Unit soldiers and delivered words of encouragement. He thanked for the troop’s services to bring peace and stability in Lebanon, and wished that they may successfully undertake their duties until their safe return.

During his visit to the UNIFIL Headquarters, Vice Minister Shin met with deputy commander Apurba Qomar Bardalai and commended UNIFIL’s contributions to the prevention of military clashes as well as to the restoration of social order in Lebanon. Moreover, Vice Minister asked General Bardalai to continue rendering support for the Dongmyung Unit.
