Judge Song Sang-hyun of the International Criminal Court (ICC) was elected as the President of the ICC for a 3 year term (2009-2012) on March 11 at the Hague, Netherlands.
- Judge Song was first elected as the judge of the ICC in 2003, and now serves as the head of the ICC Appeals Chamber.
- 17 ICC judges participated in a mutual vote, and Judge Fatoumata Dembele Diarra of Mali was elected First Vice-President and Judge Hans-Peter Kaul of Germany as Second Vice-President.
This is the first time a Korean judge has been elected as the president of an international court, and Judge Song’s election is seen as an accomplishment that has raised Korea’s standing in the field of international law.
The ICC is the first permanent international criminal court established in 2002 to punish perpetrators of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression. The ICC is currently dealing with 7 cases including Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic.
