2nd Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo’s Visit to Guatemala

During his visit to Guatemala on October 27-28, 2nd Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo met Vice President Rafael Espada on October 27 and Deputy Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Ibarra on October 28. In the meetings, the two sides noted with satisfaction active bilateral cooperation in economy and trade, and discussed ways to promote cooperation in the fields of energy and infrastructure, information technology and education.

During the courtesy call on Vice President, Vice Minister Shin requested that the Guatemalan government take interest in and render support to Korean firms that hope to participate in the state-pursued Xalala hydroelectric plant and military modernization projects. Also, he introduced the Korean government’s low-carbon, green-growth policy, and policies on e-government and e-learning.

Vice President Espada expressed interest in the low-carbon, green-growth policy pursued by the Korean government, and acknowledged Korea’s advanced science and technology, IT-related support for developing countries, and development in education. He hoped for expanded cooperation in the said sectors in the years to come.

Vice Minister Shin extended appreciation to the Guatemalan government for its special interest in Korean residents in the country and requested continued interest and cooperation in this regard. The Guatemalan side responded it would render support.

The visit to Guatemala by Vice Minister Shin Kak-soo, the latest in a series of high-level officials’ exchange following the Korean President’s visit to the country in July 2007 and visits to Korea by Guatemalan Vice President Espada in May 2008 and by Deputy Foreign Minister Trinidad in March 2009, is expected to contribute to promoting substantive cooperation between Korea and Guatemala.
