Regarding the damage caused by the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, given the seriousness of the damage and the demand for additional humanitarian assistance and recovery and reconstruction, the Government of the Republic of Korea will provide a total 10 million dollars of emergency relief and recovery and reconstruction assistance - public and private - which include 1 million dollars of initial emergency relief assistance.
In accordance with “Overseas Emergency Relief Act,” the ROK government held a Public-Private Joint Committee Meeting on Overseas Emergency Relief on January 19, presided over by 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Chun Yung-woo.
At the Meeting, the Government of the Republic of Korea has decided to contribute 1.2 million dollars out of short-term emergency relief aid for earthquake-torn Haiti to Flash Appeal, announced by the United Nations.
Regarding the plan for 10 million dollars of assistance to the quake-hit Haiti which the government announced on January 18, the meeting discussed the details of short-term emergency relief, and mid-to long-term recovery and reconstruction assistance. The meeting also discussed ways of cooperation between government and the private sector.
Following the meeting, the government has decided to dispatch the second emergency medical team and participate in the Flash Appeal, which was announced by the United Nations, as part of additional emergency relief efforts in Haiti.
