ROK-Thailand FMs Meeting

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan, who is in Yokohama, Japan for the APEC Summit, met with his Thai counterpart Kasit Piromya on November 13.

In his first meeting with his Thai counterpart since taking office, Minister Kim highlighted that Thailand, which had fought alongside Korea in the Korean War, is one of Korea’s traditional allies, and expressed his expectation to work with Minister Kasit to further strengthen Korea-Thailand ties. Meanwhile, after voicing satisfaction with the steady increase in investment in Thailand by Korean firms; the accumulated number of Korean tourists to the country having reached one million; and the present Korea-Thailand ties, Minister Kasit spoke of his hope to cooperate closely with Minister Kim to further develop Korea-Thailand relations.

Touching on Thailand’s pursuit of high-value-added industries for sustainable growth and focus on fostering green growth, new and renewable energy, information and communications and other high-tech industries, Minister Kasit voiced hope to work closely with Korea in such sectors. Hailing Minister Kasit’s proposal, Minister Kim responded that if the Thai side lays out concrete cooperation-project plans in its areas of interest, they will be positively considered and relayed to Korean firms.

Concluding the meeting, Minister Kim conveyed appreciation for Thailand’s support for Korea’s proposal to establish the Korea-Mekong Foreign Ministers’ Meeting presented at the Korea-ASEAN Summit last October, and stated that he looked forward to strong support by Thailand for the development cooperation in the Mekong region. Welcoming Korea’s interest in and support to the region, Minister Kasit expected Korea and Thailand to work closely on its development cooperation.
