Korea welcomes the US Senate’s approval of the New START Treaty

The Korean government welcomes the US Senate’s approval of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START Treaty) on Dec. 22, which was signed by US President Obama and Russian President Medvedev in Prague, Czech Republic, in April.

The US Senate’s approval of the New START Treaty is not only a measure which fulfills nuclear disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), but also very significant progress toward a world free of nuclear weapons in the end. The Korean government expects the New START Treaty to contribute largely to strengthening the global disarmament and non-proliferation regime after going into effect swiftly upon approval by Russia’s parliament.
