Korea's Humanitarian Assistance to Kenya, China and Fiji

Kenya

On January 14, the Korean government had sent an emergency relief fund of US$100,000 to the UNICEF Office in Kenya in an effort to help many refugees of the country who were suffering from a serious humanitarian crisis due to the disturbances following the presidential election held at the end of 2007. Meanwhile, the UN agency has been providing medical wervice, nutrition, water and sanitation as well as shelter supplies to the children and women refugees in Kenya.

As the United Nations announced its Kenya Emergency Humanitarian Response Plan 2008 on January 16, which was developed by 22 aid partners including United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations with the participation of the Government of Kenya, the Korean Government decided to provide additional US$200,000 in assistance to UN organizations in response to the UN's Flash Appeal for Kenya : US$100,000 to the World Food Programme and US$100,000 to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs(OCHA), which have been providing food assistance to the affected people of Kenya and monitoring protection needs of the displaced in the country.


China  

A recent record-breaking snowfall in the middle and southern regions of China in late January has caused the loss of many lives and property damages there. In this regard, President Roh Moo-hyun sent a letter of solace to the Chinese President Hu Jintao on February 1. On the same date, the Korean government sent a humanitarian emergency relief fund amounting to $100,000 to the Chinese government to assist the recovery efforts in token of consolation.

Fiji

In addition, the Korean Government decided to provide an emergency relief fund of US$ 50,000 to Fiji on February 4, as a cyclone recently hit the country, claiming a lot of lives and property.
