Beauty of the Goryeo Celadon

o Celadon in Transition

1) Changes in Color

As the inlaying techniques to decorate celadon pottery developed throughout the 12th and 13th century, color and patterns of Goryeo celadon underwent remarkable changes : Glaze got more transparent and thin-layered in order to make the inlaid pattern more distinguished. In addition, potters of Goryeo developed a new technique of glazing- underglazing with copper-paint. To tint the celadon pottery red, patterns are drawn on the pottery using copper-based paint before applying the glaze. After being fired at 1300℃, the copper drawings turn bright red through the process of oxidation. This was one of the most elaborate and beautiful coloring technique invented in the history of pottery.

2) Changes in Pattern

After the invasion of the Mongol empire in Goryeo , signs of decadence, which began to spread in the Goryeo society, are relected in the celadon pottery at that time, particularly in its pattern. While the inlaid celadons in the 12th century were decorated with a few different patterns arranged with elegant delicacy, those made in the aftermath of the Mongolian invasion shows relatively simple and repetitive ones. Moreover, some potters began to stamp decorative patterns on the pottery rather than inlay them. These changes had an effect on the porcelains of Joseon dynasty, of which patterns got more bold with minimalist style.

In the next edition, you will find the effects of Goryeo celadon pottery on the porcelains of Joseon dynasty.
