Newly-Elected Koreans within the United Nations System

Former Head of the Dongmyung Unit Elected as the Senior Military Liaison Officer of the UN Secretariat

Colonel Kim Ung-geon, former head of the Dongmyung Unit from July 2007 to January 2008, which has been dispatched as a part of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was elected as Senior Military Liaison Officer of the Integrated Operational Team in the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).

As the Senior Military Liaison Officer, Colonel Kim will serve as an advisor and coordinator between the local government, troop contributing countries and several departments of UN Secretariat on the issues such as PKO activities, establishment of operation forces, and appointment of military personnel.

Korean Professor Elected as the member of the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee

Professor Chung Chin-Sung at the Department of Sociology of Seoul National University was elected as a founding member of the United Nations Human Rights Council Advisory Committee in Geneva on March 26. Professor Chung served as an alternate member of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights from 2000 to 2004 and as a member of the Sub-Commission from 2004 to 2007. The length of tenure for newly elected founding members was decided by lot to be in between 1 to 3 years, and Professor Chung was given the incumbency of 2 years.     

With professor Chung’s election as a founding member of the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee, Republic of Korea is expected to make more contributions to the international efforts to protect and promote human rights along with the member of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women Shin Heisoo and the chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child Lee Yanghee.
